What 25 Years as an OT Has Taught Me About Helping Kids

When I first became an OT in 1998, I never would have dreamed I’d be doing OT the way I do now.

Back then, I didn’t even own a cell phone. I relied on a complicated map book to get around (Google Maps truly changed my life!). Social media wasn’t a thing. And the idea of working with families entirely online would have sounded impossible.

Fast forward 25 years, and here I am — running programs, parent consultations, and workshops online, all while home-educating my son. Somehow the universe really was looking out for me.

1998–2001: Learning from the Best

I began my OT career in California, working at an incredible Sensory Integration clinic surrounded by some of the best mentors and colleagues I could have asked for.

I learned so much in those years. They made me who I am today.

I admit I got lost often on home and school visits (thank you, paper maps), but luckily most days I was based in the clinic, soaking up everything I could.

2001–2011: Home and School Visits

For the next decade, I worked with babies through 12-year-olds in their homes and schools.

This stage of my OT life taught me the importance of meeting kids where they are — in their natural environments. I saw how their surroundings shaped their behaviour and progress, and how much parents mattered in making therapy meaningful.

2011–2019: A Clinic in My Living Room

When we moved to London, I turned our living room into a clinic. This was such a dream — families and kids could come into my home and use stairs, a kitchen, and a garden, just like they would in everyday life.

In 2012, I also became a mum. Having a home clinic allowed me to be present with my son while still doing the work I loved.

It was during this time that I shifted from traditional weekly sessions to intensive therapy blocks. I also began working much more closely with parents — collaborating, problem-solving, and supporting them alongside their children.

2020–Now: Breaking My Wrist, Lockdown, and Going Online

In 2020, everything changed. I broke my wrist, and then lockdown happened.

My son was making YouTube videos for his channel and said: “Mum, you should do the same for the kids you work with.” He was right.

That’s when I began creating videos, running online programs, and starting this Facebook community. From there, I developed my Foundations for Writing program and the No Writing Way™.

Slowly, my work shifted fully online. And I realised something: once you see the results that come from supporting parents to support their kids, you don’t want to go back to the old way of doing OT.

Now I 100% work online. I run workshops, programs, and parent consultations, and I’ve seen more growth and progress for kids this way than I ever did in a clinic room.

And as a single parent, being able to work this way has been the biggest lifesaver. Parents understand if my son pops in to ask me a question, and I get to show up authentically as both an OT and a mum.

Looking Ahead

Never would I have thought I’d be putting myself out there on social media, creating programs, and working entirely online. But I’m so grateful that my work and parenting have grown and evolved together … and that I get to do OT in a way that feels aligned, sustainable, and effective.

I often wonder what OT will look like in the next 15–20 years.

One thing I know for sure: kids thrive when parents are supported. That’s the heart of my work now ….supporting parents so they feel confident, equipped, and connected to their child’s needs.
