All in a Year: From Pencil Refusal to Confident Writing

I often say it takes time to support kids with drawing and writing.

I always call it a journey—and it really is such an honour to be on that journey with the families I work with.

This particular journey began exactly a year ago.

Where It Started

When this parent joined my Foundations for Writing program, their child refused to pick up a pencil.

By the end of the program in July 2024, we were celebrating that they had drawn a picture and written an “M.” You can see it in the first photo below. It was such a joyous moment.

What Happened Next

Since then, I’ve continued to support the family one-to-one.

  • I meet with the parent.

  • We do video-based reviews.

  • I share a program each time.

  • Sometimes, I even send a video note to their child for encouragement (the parent told me how much they love it).

  • And then we follow up.

We have done this throughout the year.

Here’s the important part: we have done no writing practice.

Instead, we worked on:

  • sensory processing,

  • body and spatial awareness,

  • body alignment,

  • movement, balance, and strength,

  • coordination, and

  • sensory regulation.

And what you see in the second photo is what they now write.

By themselves.
Without writing practice.
Just using the No Writing Way™.

Beyond Writing

At the end of the school year, I received a message from the parent that completely made my day.

The growth they described went far beyond writing. It touched their child’s:

  • confidence,

  • regulation,

  • participation,

  • posture, and

  • resilience.

Why I Share This

I really love working the way I do.
I love working together with parents.
I love getting to know the kids—even sending messages directly to them.
And I love seeing results like this.

I share this not just to “toot my horn” (though that still feels uncomfortable!)—but mostly to offer you inspiration and hope for your child too.

Your Child’s Journey Can Start Here

Every child’s writing journey looks different — and it doesn’t start with handwriting practice. It starts with supporting the body, the senses, and regulation so writing can feel possible.

That’s what the Foundations for Writing program is all about.

Foundations for Writing is my 10-week parent coaching program where you learn to support your child’s sensory, motor, and emotional needs so writing becomes possible—without drills, worksheets, or endless pencil grip practice.

Instead, we focus on the foundations: sensory processing, regulation, movement, balance, strength, and coordination. Parents learn how to weave this support into everyday life so kids feel safe and confident in their bodies—and thenwriting starts to click.

The next round of Foundations for Writing is now open for enrolment.
