I’m excited to share stories from the last cohort of my Foundations for Writing program so you can feel hopeful for your child who is struggling with writing and know there are holistic ways to help them.
Foundations for Writing is my 10-week parent group coaching program where we get to the root cause of your child’s writing difficulties. It follows a step-by-step process to build the underlying sensory, motor, and emotional skills they need. Through video activity demonstrations, Zoom Q&As, and support in our private Facebook community, you’ll feel equipped to help your child at their pace.
Here’s a story of how a child gained confidence in writing without pressure through holistic writing support:
The Real Reason Writing Felt Hard
This child was very sensitive to movement and avoided writing because it was too difficult for them.
They had a weak core, shoulders, and hands, which made it hard to sit upright or hold a pencil comfortably. Writing felt like too much so they avoided it.
A Whole-Body Approach to Writing
Instead of focusing on handwriting practice, we started with the body.
By working on sensory processing, core strength, and coordination, things started to shift. We built foundational skills like:
- Body and spatial awareness
- Confidence with movement
- Strength and coordination
All of this was done in the context of play, exploration, and parent-led support at home during their 10 weeks in Foundations for Writing.
Here’s what happened:
Weeks 3–4:
- Leaping onto the bed with confidence
- Making spirals and snails with Play-Doh
Weeks 6–7:
- Improved grasp and colouring for fun with more accuracy
- Steadier hand with less movement
- Drawing more detailed dinosaurs
Week 8:
- Getting in and out of the tub independently
- Spacing words and tracing numbers spontaneously
- Reading progress from 16-page books to 32-page books
Progress Looks Different Than You Think
Parents often wonder if progress in movement and coordination relates to writing and the answer is YES!
When we build foundational skills, the ripple effect reaches beyond just writing.
This child didn’t gain writing confidence by being pushed to write.
They gained it by becoming stronger, more aware of their body, and more regulated; and the writing followed.

The great news is, you don’t have to wait.
📍 The Helping Kids Write DIY mini-workshop will guide you through understanding why your child struggles with writing and what to do instead.
You’ll also get video demonstrations of fun, practical activities that help develop the skills your child needs, without pressure or drills.
