What Even Is a Video-Based Assessment?
People are often surprised when I say I offer video-based assessments for kids.
“Is that even effective?”
“Can you really assess a child that way?”
I get those questions a lot ……. and I get them!
So let me walk you through what a video-based assessment actually is, how it works, and why it can be so helpful.
It’s exactly what it sounds like: instead of seeing your child in a clinic, I observe them through video clips you take of them doing regular, everyday activities at home, on the playground, or other settings.
Here’s how the process works:
Step 1: We talk first
You tell me what’s going on, what’s been tricky, and what kind of help you’re looking for.
I make sure it’s something I can support you with and if so, we go ahead.
Step 2: You take videos
I send you a list of everyday activities to film. These might include:
-
Climbing, running, or jumping
-
Drawing, cutting, or building
-
Eating, dressing, or getting ready
-
Playing indoors or outdoors
These activities give insight into gross motor, fine motor, visual motor, coordination, balance, body awareness, and sensory processing.
No need for your child to “perform.” These are just natural clips of what they do, when they’re ready.
Step 3: I review the videos
I carefully observe each video while pausing, zooming, and rewatching clips so I can really see what your child is doing and how they’re moving, sensing, and responding. From this video review, I come up with observations and findings to share with you.
Step 4: We meet
I send you a Zoon link prior so we can meet. We talk through what I saw on the video review, what you observe day to day, and we build a picture of:
-
Your child’s sensory and motor profile
-
Their strengths
-
What might be getting in the way
-
What accommodations or strategies could help
Step 5: You get a custom plan
I put together a plan tailored to your child that is simple, practical, and sensory-informed that you can do together at home.
And then we meet again for a follow-up session to review progress, adjust your program if needed, and continue supporting your journey.
Why I Love This Approach
✅ It’s natural — your child is in their everyday environment, doing everyday things.
✅ It’s flexible — no rushing to a clinic, no appointment pressure, do when works for you and them.
✅ It’s gentle — many kids feel safer and more confident at home with their safe parents.
✅ It lets me get a richer picture than I often could in a clinic session as I see your child in their real settings where they’re also comfortable.
You, their parent, stay at the centre of this.
And for kids who won’t always “perform on demand”? That’s okay.
You can send whatever feels right, or if video doesn’t work, we can start with a brainstorm session instead.
Could This Work for Your Child?
If you’ve been stuck on waiting lists, unable to access support, or want help that feels collaborative and respectful of your child’s needs…this is for you.
